Introducing Alcoa Chiropractor Dr. Scott Marsh

I have been interested in staying healthy since I was a teenager. Back in the 70’s I was eating yogurt, organic foods and I was working out several times a week. I was competing in amateur bodybuilding competitions back when Arnold was winning all the professional titles. I had been accepted to UNC Chapel Hill to begin my degree in nutrition when a blessing in disguise came into my life. I was driving home one night down a dark country road and was unaware that several Angus cattle (the black ones) had gotten out of their pasture and were crossing the road. My car hit one of the cows and began to flip. I was cut up pretty badly, and my lower back was severely injured. Between the emergency room and my family doctor, I was loaded up on pain pills and muscle relaxers. The pain was unbearable, and after a while I was beginning to wonder if I was going to live the rest of my life in pain.

Introducing the preferred Chiropractor in Alcoa

As a last resort, I called a local chiropractor. "What do I have to lose?" I thought. I was only eighteen years old, and couldn't go on like this. The chiropractor explained that he couldn't heal me, but that my body was designed to heal itself, if we could just locate and correct whatever was not allowing that natural healing process to occur. That made perfect sense to me. My chiropractor spent some time talking with me about my future, and I could see that he really enjoyed his work in a way that very few people I knew did. Following a few adjustments, my back DID begin to heal, and I made the decision to change my major to pre-med. I had decided that I wanted to become a chiropractor!

Following my pre-med education, I loaded everything I owned into my Honda Civic and moved to Houston Texas to attend Texas Chiropractic College. I was very surprised to learn that I would be studying not only the anatomy, physiology, neurology and nutrition that I was expecting, but also cardiology, obstetrics, gynecology, hematology, opthalmology...I would even spend the better part of a year performing an autopsy! We had some really great instructors, PhD's, Doctors of Medicine and Doctors of Chiropractic. My favorite part was when we FINALLY could begin to practice what we had learned in the outpatient clinic. I loved taking care of people! In fact, I was the first student in my class to complete all my clinic requirements, so all the other interns began to bring their "difficult" cases to me. My senior year, I contracted a severe case of hepatitis from eating undercooked shellfish. One of my instructors, Dr. Monroe Cobb came by my apartment and adjusted my spine twice daily in order to help boost my immune function. Along with some nutritional supplements, my blood work returned to normal within eight days. During that time I had lost eighteen pounds! Looking back, experiencing first-hand the incredible healing power of the body when it is functioning free from interference was one of the best things that ever happened to me.

My health philosophy is simple: Our bodies were designed and programmed to heal themselves. New cells are being created throughout our bodies every second of our lives, whether we're eight days old or ninety years old.

Stress (emotional, physical and chemical) can overload our nerve system...like plugging too many appliances into an outlet. This overload results in interference between the brain and the body it is attempting to control. Since the nerve system controls every cell in the body, interference has an adverse reaction on every aspect of our lives...our muscles, our immune system, our ability to concentrate, our emotions, etc.

Chiropractic's role is to locate and correct any interference and restore communication within the body, allowing normal function to return. Doesn't that just make sense?

Dr. Scott Marsh, Alcoa ChiropractorI have two daughters. Makena is ten, and Olivia is six. They are the most important people in my life, and both have been checked weekly since birth to make sure their little bodies are free from interference. They look forward to their adjustments. Neither Makena nor Olivia require any medication, nor have they ever received a vaccination…every year their pediatrician comments on how healthy they are.

Although it has been years since I have competed as a bodybuilder, I still try to make it to the gym at least three times a week. I have seriously studied martial arts over the years, but decided to hang up my belt while I can still walk without a limp! I play a little piano ("Last Date" is my favorite song to play), and can't pass up good Mexican or Italian food.

If I were to live anywhere other than here in East Tennessee (which I love), it would probably be the beach. I love the sand, the water, the seafood...everything but the hurricanes!.

Since I can't adjust myself, I often drive to the other side of town (or even another town) for my weekly check-up. Regular check-ups are a part of my family's life, just like eating a balanced, healthy diet and getting plenty of exercise on a regular basis. In fact, I look at our chiropractic care as one of the best things we can do for ourselves...I mean, if you had to choose only one system to take care of from birth to the grave, doesn't it make sense to take care of the system that controls ALL of the other systems...the nerve system?

Enough about me! How can we help you and your family live up to your health potential?  Give us a call at 681-2222.  We're here to help!
